2018 Photos of the Month

December
Happy holidays from the Walsworth group! Pictured here are group members Oren, Nithya, Dominik, Raisa, Connor, and Jenny (L-R) at the Physics Department’s Annual Holiday Party.

November
Jenny and Matthew, known as the brain team, work at the Center of Brain Science in the Northwest Laboratories, trying to solve the mysteries of neural networks with their own on-board neural networks. See the recent article in the Harvard Gazette for more information on their latest technique to simultaneously sense all Cartesian components of a magnetic field using NV-diamond magnetometers.

October
Nick submits his weekly report by any means necessary! For example, here he attempts to communicate via the 1833 Gauss Weber telegraph in Goettingen, Germany, while attending the Observing the Sun-as-a-star workshop.

September
A close-up of our brand new turn-key taccor laser frequency comb from Laser Quantum. The magic of supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber produces a nearly white light output when pumped with narrow near-infrared pulses from the taccor Ti:sapphire oscillator. Seen in the background, this light dispersed by a grating produces a striking rainbow-like pattern! This spectrum actually contains hundreds of thousands of individual comb teeth, ultimately to be used in an “astro-comb” that serves to calibrate high-resolution astrophysical spectrographs employed in exoplanet searches.

August
Walsworth group rock-climbing outing to Brooklyn Boulders Somerville with spouses and friends. Pictured group members: Jenny Schloss, Aakash Ravi, Nick Langellier, Raisa Trubko, and Maya Miklos.

July
Former grad student Emma Rosenfeld (now in the Lukin group) met Senator Elizabeth Warren recently at a local Cambridge restaurant. Sen. Warren’s motto of “We will persist” is a good lesson for physics, politics & life.

Former grad student Linh Pham (now at Lincoln Lab) meeting Senator Elizabeth Warren!

June
Congratulations to Paul Lee for successfully defending his PhD thesis! Dr. Lee is pictured here, surrounded by members of his doctoral defense committee: Wolfgang Ketterle, Ron, Vladan Vuletic and Liang Fu (from left to right).

May
Publicity photo of Ron playing with the picoliter NV-NMR experiment, which was used in our recent Nature paper. A popular article about this experiment appeared in the Harvard Gazette.

April
Group Alumnus, Jenny Schloss, has been featured in PBS digital studios show “Physics Girl”, where she talks about the ‘magic diamond’. You can watch the full video here. A Star is Born!

March
Visiting student Mamiko Tatsuta working on the 2 NV pair experiment.

Research assistant Andrew Xu working on the 2 NV pair experiment.

February
Group night out to Harpoon Brewery!

January
Erik Bauch defended his thesis successfully, finally ready to be a true physicist! Congratulations Dr. Bauch!
